Jason Meyer and Bethlehem Baptist Church

I’m sure the campus of Louisiana College is buzzing today.

Since John Piper announced his resignation in May many friends have asked me if I thought Jason Meyer would be his successor. Without batting an eye I always said yes. Last night the news was made official.

John Piper tweeted two articles, Justin Taylor’s Jason Meyer: Candidate to Succeed John Piper at Bethlehem Baptist Church and his own provided at Desiring God. He also wrote a wonderful piece on Meyer’s readiness to assume this position.

Here is my contribution for Bethelehem Baptist Church as an outsider looking in during their most important decision. I will provide only five reasons why I believe Jason Meyer is the God-ordained man for this position.

1. Jason Meyer Is Ready

There is no doubt in my mind, neither Piper’s it seems, that Meyer is ready for this position. It was clearly evident when he was our Dean of Chapel at Louisiana College. I could always sense his pastoral heart in personal conversations. He is a fantastic expositor of the Word and is never ill prepared. He walks into the pulpit and preaches as if it were his last sermon each time.

2. Jason Meyer Is a Man of God

I cannot begin to write about the conversations we had during our stay at Louisiana College. There were many after class, at the Healthplex, lunch, in his office, after school, and at church that are still very fresh on my mind. Each time we talked I always felt the joy of the Lord exploding off of him.

3. Jason Meyer Is Humble

He will never admit this, but Meyer is tremendously humble. This is further evidence that he is ready.

4. Jason Meyer Knows His Stuff

I took Meyer for every class he taught at Louisiana College. He taught me New Testament, Greek 1&2, Spiritual Formation, Preaching, and Philosophy and Worldviews. He is well trained in all areas and it was a joy to learn under him during his stay

5. Jason Meyer Is a Leader

He leads by example from the One who leads him. If ever I had a question for him there was always an open door or a phone call I could make and he would help. When I preached a year at a Christian school it was Meyer who helped me formulate a plan for my sermons. It was Meyer who helped me fall in love with the Greek language and showed me how closely it brought me to the throne of God. It was Meyer who taught me preaching and exemplified it himself in the pulpit. It was Meyer who introduced me to books that have had the greatest impact upon my life.

And he’s still not a bad basketball player, but don’t tell him I said that.

To those at Bethlehem Baptist Church, it will only prove beneficial to the church that you elect Jason Meyer as your next pastor.

    Hey Jason,
Sorry i didn’t text you back. You know i’m not the best with phones. It was fun to stumble across your post that led me to your blog. I too am very excited that he has been nominated. I’ve been praying for him concerning this because I felt that he would make a great pastor of our church. Pray for him and his wife. I’m sure things are going to change quickly for them.
    Love you bro,
    Brian V

    • It is so good to hear from you Brian! Yes I was praying that for his family this morning. I can’t even begin to imagine how it’s all about to change for them, but in such a great way. Hope and pray you and your family are doing great!
